FIDO2
FIDO2 is a specification, not a product or a company: a public document describing how authentication should work, which anyone is free to implement. It is published jointly by the FIDO Alliance, an industry consortium, and the W3C, the body that standardises the web.
It covers the whole path from website to hardware, in two halves:
- WebAuthn handles the conversation between the website and the browser, including the domain check that makes phishing impossible.
- CTAP2 handles the conversation between the browser and your authenticator, over NFC, USB or Bluetooth.
Because it is an open standard with no licence fee and no gatekeeper, a certified device works with any compliant service without either party knowing the other exists. That is what a passkey is built on, and why changing browser, phone or operating system does not strip you of your credentials.
Seedkeeper PRO is FIDO2 Level 1 certified, certificate FA001202600016. Learn more in What is FIDO2?
